Grant Awarded for Jewish Studies Faculty Gathering this Fall

11:47am EDT, 15 Jun 2017

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 15, 2017) — The SUNY Plattsburgh Jewish studies program has been awarded an American Academy of Jewish Research grant that will fund a retreat for faculty to discuss challenges they face in a Jewish studies program.

According to Dr. Jonathan Slater, director of the Jewish studies program, Jewish studies faculty from SUNY Plattsburgh, McGill University, Concordia University and Universite de Montreal will participate in “Approaches to Teaching Jewish Studies in the 21st Century: Examining Best Practices in Curricular Design” Oct. 18-19 at Valcour Inn and Conference Center.

“I’m delighted our proposal was successful,” Slater said. The $5,000 grant “will allow us to convene Jewish studies faculty from these four participating institutions — and possibly from elsewhere — to discuss some of the challenges facing Jewish studies pedagogy.”

As part of the retreat, senior scholars will speak in depth on current trends and approaches to teaching the subject at the university level.

It is the second year in a row that the program, in collaboration with Concordia and University de Montreal, was successful in winning an AAJR grant. Last year’s award allowed the three colleges to hold a series of lectures in Montreal and at SUNY Plattsburgh.
