SUNY Distinguished Service Nominations

In accordance with the call for nominations from SUNY System Administration, Dr. Jay M. Stein, Provost and VP for Academic Affairs invites nominations for the prestigious tenured University ranks of:

Any member of the campus community may submit a nomination for promotion. However, the nominee must have held the rank of tenured, Full Professor or Librarian for five years prior to the nomination, must have at least three years of full-time service at the nominating institution, and must have completed at least ten years of full-time service in the State University of New York.  Students especially are encouraged to nominate.

Nominations should be forwarded to the Office of the Provost (Kehoe 202) and will be reviewed by a local selection committee established according to the Performance Review Policies and Procedures (Article III.13) and the SUNY-wide Policies and Procedures.

Please note that under SUNY and College Guidelines, these nominations and the process of selecting candidates for SUNY consideration for these ranks are confidential.  Information about nominations and further deliberations should be restricted to those with legitimate need to know because of their role in the process.

Any member of the campus community may submit a nomination. The deadline for the submission of nominations is October 15, 2008.

Criteria and Eligibility

Distinguished Professorship

The Distinguished Professorship is a tenured University rank that can only be conferred by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. Nominees for the rank must have achieved national or international prominence and a distinguished reputation within his or her chosen field through significant contributions to the research literature or through artistic performance or achievement in the case of the fine arts. The person's work must be of such a character that his or her presence will tend to elevate the standards of scholarship of colleagues both within his or her academic field and beyond. The person's work must be of such quality that students and scholars on other campuses of the University could and would wish to benefit by lectures and seminars, or other appropriate presentations he or she might bring to them.

Distinguished Service Professorship

The Distinguished Service Professorship is a tenured University rank that can be conferred only by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. It may be conferred upon faculty in any of the disciplines or fields of study.  Nominees for the rank must have achieved a distinguished reputation for service not only to the campus and the University, but also to the community, the State of New York or even the nation, by sustained effort in the application of intellectual skills, drawing from his/her scholarly and research interests to issues of public concern.

Distinguished Librarianship

The Distinguished Librarianship is a tenured University rank that can be conferred only by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. It may be conferred upon librarians who have demonstrated outstanding librarianship over a period of years at the graduate, undergraduate and/or professional levels - not only to the campus and the University, but also to the community, the State of New York or even the nation.

Distinguished Teaching Professorship

The Distinguished Teaching Professorship is a prestigious tenured University rank that will be awarded only to persons who have demonstrated outstanding teaching competence over a period of years at the graduate, undergraduate, or professional levels.

Chancellor's Award for Excellence Nominations

Nominations are sought for Chancellor's Award for Excellence in the following areas:

Any member of the campus community may submit a nomination. The deadline for the submission of nominations is October 15, 2008.

Criteria and Eligibility

Please note: Recipients of an Excellence Award may not be nominated for another Excellence Award within a ten-year period and may never be nominated again in the same category once they have won that award.

Excellence in Teaching

The nomination package should describe how the individual excels in each of the following selection criteria: teaching techniques and expectations of students, scholarship and professional growth, student services, and other major professional achievements. Independent evaluations of teaching ability (for example, SIR results) are required and teaching excellence should be above the norm of performance expectations.

Nominee must have taught full time at least 3 full years prior to nomination and should have achieved tenure.

Excellence in Faculty Service

The nominee must demonstrate consistently superior service. Service may be considered to local, community, regional, state-wide, national or international service in their individual disciplines or professional organizations or societies. Service may also be considered as leadership in either local or system-wide faculty governance.

Nominee must be a full-time teaching faculty who meet the selection criteria and have completed three full time years of service on the nominating campus.

Excellence in Professional Service

The nomination package should include materials addressing how the nominee sought to improve their own role on campus, worked to better the campus as a whole, and who are considered professional role models for the campus. Successful nominees should be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to the entire campus family as well as the larger external professional community.

Nominee must have been employed full time at the campus 3 full years prior to their nomination. The nominees must come from the ranks of professional staff (not classified staff) and must have at least 50% of their time in non-teaching service

Excellence in Librarianship

The nomination package should include materials supporting the individual's claim that they have provided service above and beyond normal performance expectations. It should address service to the university and the profession as well as scholarship and professional growth.

Nominee must be employed fulltime as a professional librarian 3 years prior to the nomination.

Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activity

The nomination package should include materials which would provide evidence of excellence in scholarship or creative activity. Examples of such might be a list of published materials or performances or other activities of an exemplary nature beyond the campus norm.

Nominee must have taught full time at least 3 full years prior to nomination and should have achieved tenure.
