North Country Scholarship

Request Information

If you are a North Country resident with a high school grade average of 90 or above and a qualifying SAT/ACT score, you can come to SUNY Plattsburgh and pay no tuition.

And if you keep your grades up, your free tuition can last up to four years. Here's the deal:

  • Graduate from a high school in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, or St. Lawrence County.
  • Graduate in June 2017 and have a cumulative average of 90 or above in a Regents program of study at the time of admission.
  • Earn a 1080 or higher on the new SAT (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math scores combined), or a 1000 or higher on the old SAT (Critical Reading and Math scores combined). Note – scores will not be super scored across the new SAT and old SAT exams. Or, earn a 21 or higher on the ACT.
  • Applicants to our nursing program are not eligible for the North Country Scholarship but are instead eligible for the Cardinal Nursing Scholarship.
  • Be accepted for admission to SUNY Plattsburgh.
  • Pay $250 deposit before starting freshman year. Funds are applied to other billed costs.
  • Attend full-time beginning in August 2017, taking 12 or more credits.
  • Live on campus or commute from home. Room, board, and fees are not included in scholarship.
  • Complete college application for admission and related requirements, including filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and applying to the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The Plattsburgh school code must be included on both the FAFSA (002849) and TAP application (0940).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen who pays the in-state tuition rate.
  • Scholarship covers unpaid tuition after Tuition Assistance Program benefits and any other tuition-specific scholarship for which you are eligible have been applied. Scholarship is for unpaid tuition only. Student is responsible for fees, textbooks, related supplies, and any room and board.
  • Maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA in each fall or spring semester to which the scholarship applies. Student may receive scholarship for up to eight semesters of consecutive full-time study. One probationary semester is available if student falls below cumulative GPA. If the student does not satisfy all the standards at the end of this probationary semester or in any future semester, the student becomes permanently ineligible for the award in future semesters.

Other notes:

Scholarship is not increased based upon a reduction or loss of TAP resulting from circumstances within a student’s control. Examples can include, but are not limited to, loss of TAP from repeat coursework and loss of TAP from course withdrawals.

Students who need to withdraw may maintain eligibility under certain circumstances.
