SUNY Plattsburgh Police Bike Patrol

Established in the fall of 1994 the University Police Bike Patrol consisted of one bike, a specialized Rockhopper, and 3 volunteer bike officers. In the summer of 1995 two officers attended the 1st Bureau for Municipal Police Certified Bike training that was held in Ithaca, New York. The course was instructed by both major Police Bicycle organizations, IPMBA and LEBA. The week-long course covered classroom lectures on various related topics, skill courses (gotta love those cones!!) and naturally many hours of riding.

In 1997 a second bike was added to the "Fleet" a Trek 7000 with a front shock. Also in 1997 the University Police Department at Plattsburgh hosted its 1st New York State Certified Bike Patrol School. We certified 14 riders from all across New York State. We also certified 4 Police Cyclist Instructors during the week long school.

In the summer of 1998 Plattsburgh State University Police hosted our 2nd New York State certified Police Bike School. We certified 7 Police Cyclist and 1 Police Cyclist Instructor.  Even though it was a small school we managed to have plenty of fun, excitement and not to mention the long rides and killer hills!

The summer of 2000 Plattsburgh State hosted its 3rd Police Bicycle school and we certified 12 Police Cyclist and we had students from all across New York and had five different departments represented.

The 2001 Bicycle school was by far the best attended. We certified 19 riders again from all across New York State. The 19 riders represented 10 different departments. It was a great time and everyone put in a super effort.

We reqret to say that there will be no school in 2002 due to an injury to, Bob Light, our lead instructor and school coordinator. On 10th of October while riding his road bike down a mountain descent a vehicle head up the mountain turned into a driveway then proceeded to back out in front of Bob Light.  To shorten a long story it was ten days in the hospital, three broken ribs, collapsed lung and nerve damage to his left arm. It also put him out of work for 3 months, and then light duty. The arm is coming along and a full recover is expected. So the 5th Police Bicycle School will most likely be in 2003. Look for it and plan on some hard riding!

Well we just completed our 5th Police Bicycle Patrol School here at Plattsburgh State. It started off slow with one guy getting injured. We all wish him a speedy recovery.Needless to say I know what its like to be out of work.Other than the injury we had a great week.I won't complain about the 90+ degree days and no rain this year ( a first)We ended up going over 100 miles for the week and that was great considering the heat we put up with.Everyone that attended did a great job! Congrats!

Today our bike unit consists of 7 New York State Certified Police Cyclist and 2 New York State Certified Instructors. The Rockhopper and Trek 7000 have been "retired" and will be used during Police Bicycle Schools held here at Plattsburgh.  In the summer of 2001 UPD purchased 2 new Trek 6000.
