Student Service Corps at SUNY Plattsburgh
Stand Out Among Your Peers
The Mission of the Plattsburgh Student Service Corps, commonly referred to as the Service Corps, is to provide selected student members with opportunities to engage in service experiences that help local not-for-profits achieve their missions, while assisting members with college expenses. The Service Corps promotes civic engagement, leadership development, and appreciation of diversity.
Through this mission, the Service Corps engages SUNY Plattsburgh students in strengthening the local community through regular volunteer service.
This year, twenty-nine Service Corps members will enrich the quality of life in the community by providing hands on assistance to not-for-profit human service agencies in Clinton County. In exchange for their service, members will receive minimal assistance with college expenses.
What Do Our Members Do?
Service Corps Members serve a majority of their hours at one site in the local area.
Members are also called upon by local not-for-profit organizations to help coordinate, develop and manage projects that turn a community need into an ongoing service that remains long after the project is completed.
In addition to these events, members also participate in the following activities:
- Adopt-A-Highway Program
- Adopt-A-Block Program
- Salvation Army and Trinity Soup Kitchens
- CVPH Blood Drives
- Adopt-A-Friend For The Holidays Program
- Alternative Break Service Auction
- Relay for Life
- The Heart Walk
- Plattsburgh Recreation Department sponsered Trick or Treat on Safety Street
- and a host of other community events in the area
Requirements
Those who serve as members of the Plattsburgh Student Service Corps must complete an agreed upon number of hours of community service in one academic year (these requirements range from 30-300 hours, and when broken up into two academic semesters average 1-10 hours per week of service). Members must also be matriculated students at SUNY Plattsburgh.
In exchange for their efforts, all members receive a financial assistance for college and Service Corps gear that is worn to outside events. The Service Corps also offers Federal Work-Study positions to students who are interested in working with local schools and children.
Benefits
Housing Grant Program
Each member placed in this program will receive a $1275 room waiver for on-campus housing (double occupancy) for both semesters they serve in the program, totalling $2550 for the year.
Federal Work Study Program
In addition to the tuition reduction, each member placed in this program may receive up to 10 hrs/week of Federal Work-Study money for serving at a local elementary school or education-based site. Students must be eligible for Federal Work-Study aid at SUNY Plattsburgh to participate in this program.

Placement Opportunities
The Plattsburgh Student Service Corps program provides members the opportunity to serve with various not-for-profit agencies and schools based in the local community. The utilization of these Service Corps members allows these agencies to improve or augment their delivery of service in the priority areas of education, public safety, and other human needs.
The use of existing community-based resources has allowed Plattsburgh Student Service Corps members to enhance the services delivered to the citizens of the County. Some examples of the types of sites where members have the opportunity to serve include:
- Literacy Development Programs
- Crisis Intervention Agencies
- Preschool and after-school programs
- Elementary Schools
- Community Center after-school programs
- Senior Programs
