2007 Americade Event - Economic Impact Study

This report was commissioned by Americade, Inc. the producers of the Americade and Tour Expo motorcycle events which have taken place annually since 1983 in Lake George Village, New York.

Lake George Village is a resort community in Warren County, northeast New York State.  It features the natural beauty of Lake George and is easy to access from nearby Interstate 87.  The area's proximity to the Adirondack Mountains is attractive to motorcyclists who enjoy winding roads and views.

In 1986, total attendance at this event was nearly 10.000, making it the largest touring rally in the motorcycle world.  In 2004 Americade, Inc. expanded the Tour Expo tradeshow to include The Forum, Lake George's new convention center.  Over 60,000 attended that year, once again making Americade the world's largest organized multibrand motorcycle convention.

According to the Lake George Chamber of Commerce, 2007 figures again showed that Americade Week was the biggest week of business for the Lake George Region resort community, and the biggest week single boost to the local economy.  Total attendance is estimated at over 50,000.

The primary focus of this study was to measure the overall economic impact of the 2007 event on the county's economy.  The study focused on generating data to describe and quantify the following key variables of the event participants:

  1. Visitation patterns and demographic characteristics
  2. Expenditure patterns
  3. Lodging choices
  4. Motorcycle ownership patterns and future purchasing plans.

The total direct and indirect economic impact of the 2007 Americade and Tour Expo events is estimated to be almost $46 million.  This event brings significant lodging, food, attractions and shopping revenues to the greater Lake George region.  In addition, the event provides valuable destination recognition for the area as a result of the worldwide media coverage it attracts.  This exposure further benefits the region's tourism-based economy.  The data in this report may also be useful for estimating the economic impact of other events that occur in the region.

The study finds that more than 60 percent of the participants stayed in either a hotel or motel, while 13 percent stayed in campgrounds while attending Americade.

The study also revealed that many participants would be inclined to visit the area again as a result of their positive experience while attending the Americade event.
