Geographic Information Systems
What is GIS ?
GIS is a system of computer software, hardware and data, and personnel that can manipulate, analyze and present information that is tied to a spatial location.
Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place. What layers of information you combine depends on your purpose -- finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing similar crimes in a city to detect a pattern, and so on.
GIS is software that helps users visualize geographic situations and problems by mapping and analyzing large amounts of geographic data.
TAC has been using GIS since 2003 to assist county emergency management offices with data collection, database development, and emergency resource organization. TAC wrote grant applications for the county that were funded by FEMA and NYS Emergency Management Office. TAC has completed a GIS project for Clinton County and is presently working with Essex County on a similar project.
