Student Support Services Staff

Tom Thompson

Writing Skills Specialist/Coordinator of Special Projects

Hello! My name is Tom Thompson and I am a Writing Skills Specialist and the Coordinator of Special Projects at Student Support Services. As a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh and the Student Support Services program, I worked as a graduate assistant in the office for two years before joining the professional staff in the summer of 2005.

Having the opportunity to return to SSS and share my knowledge and experiences with current students has been tremendous. I especially enjoy meeting new students at orientation each summer and helping them get off to a good start in college. In addition to teaching courses in writing and reading, I am also an academic advisor for undeclared students who are SSS eligible and the note taking coordinator.

I enjoy reading, movies, watching NHL hockey games, and spending time with friends and family. Welcome, I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Hometown: Plattsburgh, NY

Courses Taught:

  • ENG100 College Writing I (Writer's Workshop)
  • FRS101 Freshman Seminar
  • RDG100 College Reading
  • RDG110 Critical Reading

Most Memorable College Experiences: Being inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa (the national leadership honor society) and finishing my graduate thesis. Also, I looked forward to the academic awards ceremony at Student Support Services each semester. It's even more fun now as a member of the staff because I get to share in the success of our students!

Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh Activities: Attending graduation and the athletic events on campus.

Best advice you would give someone regarding college: Attend every class, get to know your professors, and utilize the resources available to help you. Work hard, but take time to get involved on campus and in the community. Enjoy every day of your college experience, as you will be amazed by how quickly the time will pass.
