Fraternity/Sorority Alternative Breaks

Alternative Spring Break - Pursglove, West Virginia

Each year, 10 fraternity and sorority members are selected to participate in the Alternative Spring Break trip to The Shack Neighborhood House in Pursglove, West Virginia. During each day of this week-long visit, students participate in community outreach activities that vary each year and have included making home renovations and repairs for the elderly or disabled, overhauling a deserted building into a coal-mining museum, and assisting The Shack with facility maintenance projects. Each afternoon, students assist with The Shack's free after-school program that includes tutoring, crafts, snack break and playtime.

Alternative Winter Break - Managua, Nicaragua

In 2007, an Alternative Winter Break trip for fraternity/sorority members volunteered through the North Country Mission of Hope for two weeks in Managua, Nicaragua. This trip included community outreach such as delivering rice and beans and clothing to the impoverished and helping with a traditional holiday festival for children. Students also assisted with meals, activities, and playtime at a home for the mentally and physically disabled and worked stocking medicine and renovating a free medical clinic. This trip is tentatively scheduled to happen again in January 2009.

Both of these trips include a group reflection component about the values of service in fraternities and sororities, which helps participants articulate the impact the break had on them.
