Book Club Discussion: "Black Haze: Violence, Sacrifice, and Manhood in Black Greek-Letter Fraternities," by Ricky L. Jones
Location: Meeting Room #8
Author Ricky L. Jones examines five black Greek-letter fraternities and maintains that hazing practices within these fraternities are more deeply ingrained, physically violent, and imbued with meaning to their participants than the initiation rites of other ethnic groups. Because they do not see themselves as having the same political, social, and economic opportunities as other members of society, black fraternities and their members have come to see the ability to withstand physical abuse as the key ingredient in building and defining manhood. Join the Center for Fraternity/Sorority Life staff, fraternity/sorority leaders, advisors and faculty/staff members in this engaging book club discussion facilitated by J.W. Wiley, Director of the Center for Diversity, Pluralism & Inclusion, and alum of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Co-sponsored by the Center for Diversity, Pluralism & Inclusion.
All fraternity and sorority members who are committed to an anti-hazing new member education program should stop by the tables in the Angell College Center or the Center for Fraternity/Sorority Life for a free "Proud Member of a Non-Hazing Organization" button to wear throughout the week. Free anti-hazing buttons will be give to anyone who stops by the table for information.
In addition, a review of the history of hazing on the SUNY-Plattsburgh campus will be on display in the Feinberg Library all week. Co-sponsored by the Feinberg Library.
