SUNY Plattsburgh Orientation 2008 Programs and Activities

Administrative Welcome

A warm and sincere welcome from President Ettling or another SUNY Plattsburgh Administrator, a student government leader, and a representative from the community.

Area Bus Tour

Parents have the option to take a tour of the surrounding area in an air conditioned bus. There cost of the tour is $5.00 and is MC’d by our V.P of Student Affairs and local historian, Bill Laundry and our Dean of Students, Steve Matthews. The tour includes a stop at Rulf’s Orchard for free cider donuts, a beverage, and the opportunity to purchase various goods from their store.

A Walk In Their Shoes

Students and parents participate in a workshop designed to allow each to gain insight and perspective into what other parents and students are thinking and feeling as the transition to college begins.

Building Healthy Relationships

Students will see skits presented on issues pertaining to dating and relationships so as to create awareness and lead to some discussion.

Burghy Broadway

Orientation Leaders from the Family Staff put on several skits for parents that depict various aspects of college life, some of which are of a sensitive nature,  along with potential pitfalls students should avoid as a means to create awareness, to educate and to entertain parents. Discussion to follow.

Cardinal Connection

Cardinal Connection is designed to connect alumni volunteers with current students looking to navigate the challenges of entering the world of work. Through this program, current students can tap into a wealth of alumni knowledge that compliments what they learn in the classroom. Current students gain practical insight and experience in what comes next; have an opportunity to connect with alumni; learn more about a career of interest or explore a different career path; and more.

Checking Your Bags

Students engage in a powerful discussion with J.W. Wiley about topics pertaining to Diversity, Pluralism, and Inclusion.

Dean's Pre-Boarding Announcements

The Dean of Students, Steve Matthews, speaks with parents about what to expect as parents as their students begin their college careers here at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Family B-I-N-G-O

We provide everything you need, including PRIZES, so come play BINGO with the Orientation Leaders from the Family Staff.

First Time Flyers

Students have the opportunity to learn about our amazing First Year Experience Program (FYE) that they will participate in this coming year.

The Gauntlet

Students participate in a high energy, fun and friendly floor competition in various activities. Let’s see who comes out on top!

Information Marketplace

Parents and students have the opportunity to meet with and receive information from various offices on campus in the lobby of the Angell College Center. This serves as a great place for parents and students to meet before heading back home on Day 3 of Orientation.

The Party

The Orientation Leaders from the Student Staff perform a skit to educate, create awareness and of course entertain students on topics pertaining to college life. Discussion to follow.

Preparing for Takeoff

The Dean of Students, Steve Matthews, speaks with the students about what they and their students can expect as they join the Plattsburgh community.

Sample Room

Hey parents! Are you curious as to what a students room might look like with students actually living in it?  Ask an Orientation Leader from the Family Staff to show you our Sample Room in Moffitt Hall to get an idea as to how a room might be arranged.

Student Services Panel

Parental Distress 101: Parents, do you have concerns as a about sending your student off to college? In this session, administrators from Student Affairs address topics and answer questions that are often on the minds of parents as their students begin their transition into college here at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Ultimate Road Trip

An exciting and energy packed presentation from Monster.com discussing how to prepare for life at college.

Your Connecting Flight

Students can capitalize on this opportunity to connect with Orientation Leaders and more importantly, other students via some low key activities.
