The club is a member of the National Small College Rugby Organization(NSCRO) in Region One, the Up State Conference(UpSCRC). During the fall, they participate in the Up State Small College Rugby Conference league games. The spring schedule is made up of both scrimmages and tournaments culminating in the home TnT memorial tournament. Men’s Rugby is funded by the Student Association.
The men's and women's rugby teams sponsor the TNT Rugby Tournament. The profit from this tournament is donated to the Tony Santandrea Memorial Scholarship fund through the College Foundation. At the Rugby field, remembrance plaques and trees have been planted to remember Tony Santandrea and Trevor Green, rugby players, who died as students and Billy Erwin, a rugby alumnus who died in the World Trade Centers on 9/11.
SUNY Plattsburgh Men’s Rugby celebrated their 50th annual season with a 9-1-0 overall record, posting two shutouts and a 5-0-0 regular season en route to a New York State title and their second-straight NSCRO regional appearance.
Plattsburgh opened the season on the road by traveling to Paul Smith’s and Hamilton College, shutting both teams out 42-0 and 43-0, respectively. For their 2016 home opener, Plattsburgh welcomed St. Lawrence University. SLU, scoring their first try in the second half, would be the first team to score a try on the stout Plattsburgh defense in over three hours of game time. Plattsburgh would take the 47-17 victory. The Cardinals then visited Clarkson, stealing away an easy 50-5 win, before beating Potsdam in the season finale, 50-10. They finished their undefeated regular season outscoring their opponents 232-32 with Scrumhalf/Flyhalf Forrest Morgan leading in points-scored and Wing/Center Rodney Grimshaw in tries-scored.
Plattsburgh entered playoff contention with home-field advantage in the north. They welcomed Paul Smith's College in the first round, defeating their rival 46-25. Plattsburgh advanced to face Clarkson University in the division championship, routing the Golden Knights 62-0. With a state championship on the line, the Cardinals traveled to Ithaca to take on an impressive Bombers’ squad. Despite falling behind 3-22 early, the team rallied behind an 80 meter try by scrumhalf Forrest Morgan to enter intermission down just one. With ten minutes left on the clock, the Cardinals held a commanding 36-22 lead, but their opponent would attempt a comeback of their own. A late-game penalty kick by Morgan kept the Bombers at bay--and Plattsburgh took the hard fought 39-36 victory and their first-ever New York State Championship.
The Cardinals would advance on to the NSCRO Northeast Regional Championship at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, CT with a ticket to Colorado Springs, CO for the Final Four on the line. Plattsburgh would face their most difficult opponent of the year in the well-disciplined Tufts University side. Once again, Plattsburgh found themselves down early and tough defense inside the five meter made scoring difficult for either side. A try late by Center Zach Bessarab, with the pursuing kickoff taken straight to the house by Winger Jack Maher, had Plattsburgh back in the contest. However, Plattsburgh was unable to keep possession late and lost the game in the final minutes 32-38.
In a wet and muddy affair, Plattsburgh took on SUNY New Paltz the next day for third place in the region. Plattsburgh refused to let the defeat to Tufts derail them as they scored early and often in the battle of the SUNYs. Backups, rookies and seniors got extensive action in the second half and stunted any attempt of a New Paltz comeback, winning the last game of the season 46-31.
