Recap of 2015 Season

SUNY Plattsburgh Men’s Rugby had its best season in school history this past fall.  With an overall record of 8-2-1 (wins, loss, ties) the team was able to advance as far as the “Elite 8” in NSCRO.  The team ended their regular season undefeated going 4-0-1 and with it was able to secure home field advantage throughout the upcoming playoffs.

Plattsburgh then advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, playing Paul Smith’s College first, easily winning 39-17. Plattsburgh then faced Hamilton College for the NSCRO Upstate North division championship. Plattsburgh again won with relative ease, beating Hamilton 25-14 on a cold Halloween afternoon. The following week Plattsburgh traveled to Potsdam to take on a strong University of Rochester team, winner of the NSCRO Upstate West division, in the NSCRO State Championship game. Plattsburgh started the match strong with 10 quick points, something that Rochester was not expecting. Rochester then responded with four consecutive tries to take the lead by halftime. The second half began slowly, however an exciting offensive showing by both teams lead to one of the most nail-biting finishes of the year. Unfortunately, Rochester was able to push past the try-line after time had expired to win 40-39.

The following week Plattsburgh traveled south to Saratoga to face the University of Maine-Orono with the final spot in the Northeast Regional Championship on the line. Injury and illness plagued Plattsburgh throughout the match, however, through perseverance and pure determination were able score with seconds left from a long run by flyhalf Forrest Morgan to beat Maine 19-17. This thrilling win earned Plattsburgh State the final berth in the Northeast Regional Championship, held the next weekend at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut.

Plattsburgh played SUNY Oneonta, winners of the Tri-State Collegiate Rugby Conference, during their first match of the weekend. The “Battle of the SUNY’s” was not much of a battle at all as Plattsburgh breezed to an easy 50-5 lead by halftime. When the match’s final whistle blew, Plattsburgh jogged off of the pitch after earning an 86-17 victory. The win against Oneonta put the Men’s team in the Nation’s “Elite 8”.

The next day, Plattsburgh went against the host team, Eastern Connecticut State, for the rights to advance to the Nation’s “Final Four” in Glendale, Colorado. The game began eerily similarly to the game played against Rochester, with Plattsburgh going up 10-0 quickly. This start came as a shock to an ECSU team that, on paper, looked like the stronger team, as well as to the large home crowd that had since grown silent. Momentum eventually shifted to the favor of ECSU, as they were able to get on the board by half, 10-5. The momentum carried over to the second half, as ECSU was able to get two quick tries and a conversion to take a 17-10 lead. The scored remained that until the final 10 minutes. Plattsburgh was able to gain ground on ECSU by scoring, diminishing ECSU’s lead to only 17-15. Then with less than two minutes left on the clock, Plattsburgh was able to score again, taking a 20-17 lead. It seemed to be all but over, however some kickoff trickery allowed ECSU to gain possession of the ball close to the try line. After several penalties, hard-fought breakdowns, and a strong goal-line stand, ECSU was able to swing the ball out wide and beat Plattsburgh on the outside to score with no time left, defeating Plattsburgh 24-20, ending the Men’s season.

Each spring the men’s and women’s rugby teams sponsor the TNT Rugby Tournament. This tournament is held in memory of two men’s team members who passed away as students Tony Santandrea and Trevor Green and Billy Erwin, a rugby alumnus who died in the World Trade Centers on 9/11. The profits from the tournament are donated to the Tony Santandrea Memorial Scholarship fund through the College Foundation. Also at the Sibley rugby field there are remembrance plaques and trees planted in memory of the players.

All home games are played at the rugby field behind the Sibley parking lot and behind the high rise dorms Wilson and Moffitt.
