E-mail System Upgrades
A task force within LIS spent June-December of 2003 planning for the upgrade of our current e-mail system. The task force was asked to focus on improving the underlying infrastructure without necessarily changing the way people actually use mail. While there are many things that could have been considered with respect to client access and services, the group focused on server architecture, with an eye towards ensuring better webmail performance. Other service enhancements will be considered after the server/infrastructure upgrade phase is complete.
After reviewing five different solutions, and in consultation with other LIS technical staff, the task force selected a Linux-based solution. The process now moves to implementation as another group begins the work of developing a migration timeline, testing and configuring systems, and building software tools to simplify the process.
One of the underlying goals of this first phase is to minimize the impact on the user. In short, the group hopes to be able to replace the servers that drive e-mail with the least amount of interruption in service and the least of amount disruption to the user’s way of doing things, as possible.
This group will be holding open forums during the month of March to invite comment on the process, especially with respect to end-user impact. The group will also present options for migration and possible future enhancements. The group will also host a discussion list at e-migrate@lists.plattsburgh.edu .
