Son of MediaFileThingy
Son of MediaFileThingy is a utility program to speed along the various processes involved in posting a media file to Plattsburgh's streaming media server and creating the web pages to reference files on the media server.
The descendent of our old MediaFileThingy program, Son of MediaFileThingy simplifies and speeds along the process not only of posting a file to the media server, but also of the associated steps of encoding, capturing, indexing, captioning, and creating playlists.
The software is installed (along with a desktop camera and microphones) on all of the computers in the Instructional Technology Resource Center (Feinberg 302).
Overview
On start-up, the program provides three basic function groups: Encoding Functions , Post-Processing , and Publishing , and these are generally pursued in the order in which they appear on the screen: a media file is initially encoded for use on the server using one of the Encoding Functions , it is then optionally captioned or indexed in the Post-Processing function, and is finally moved to the media server and embedded in a web page using the Publishing function.
Tip : On the right side of the status bar at the bottom of the screen, you will see tips and notes related to the field or button beneath the mouse pointer.
Encoding Functions
The Encoding Functions are used to convert existing media files to the media-server's preferred multiple-bitrate format or to create brand new files in that format by recording directly from a desktop camera and microphone or a connected video camera.
The Encode Existing Media File button launches the process that allows you to convert existing files. Acceptable input files can be in a range of common media formats: Windows Media files (WMV, WMA, ASF), MP3 or WAV audio files, AVI video files, and MPG video files. (The program cannot convert Quicktime MOV files or RealAudio/RealVideo files, sorry.)
The Encode Live Session button launches the process that allows you to record directly from a desktop microphone, webcam, or video camera.
Post-Processing
The Index and Caption Existing File button allows you to add closed captions to a media file. You also have the opportunity of adding index markers to your media file, enabling the audience to skip directly to particular sections of the file.
Publishing
The Publish to Media Server, ANGEL button launches the interface for moving media files to the college's streaming media server, for generating and editing playlists, and for creating web pages that link directly from your ANGEL site or a web page to your media presentations on the server.
