If you have a desktop webcam, a desktop microphone, or a DV video camera plugged into your computer, you can create and encode media for the media server using these devices. A click on the Encode Live Session button launches the process, presenting you with a screen that allows you to enter information about the file you are about to create and to specify which of your connected devices should provide the input.
If you wish to record, for instance, from a connected SONY digital video camera, you would pick the Sony DV Device as your choice in the Video Source and Audio Source fields.
If you do not have a connected DV camera, you will not see it as an option in the dropdown lists.
If you do not have a connected webcam, you will have only the choice of selecting your default audio source.
Once you have adjusted the settings on this screen, a click on the Encode It button will prepare the system to encode from the specified source and introduce the Encode screen.
The encode screen presents four buttons: Start Encoding , Pause , Stop Encoding , and Cancel .
If your selection of input devices includes a desktop webcam or a connected video camera, you will see a single preview window that becomes activated whenever the encoding is engaged.
A click on the Cancel button will scrap the current encoding session and return you to the main program screen.
A click on the Start Encoding button will begin the encoding immediately and enable the Pause button. When clicked, the Pause button toggles to become a Resume button, allowing for brief interruptions in the recording process while you clear your throat or advance a tape.
A click on the Stop Encoding button stops the encoding process and presents you with the opportunity to review the encoded file and save it to your hard drive.
To save the file, click the Save button. To discard the encoded file, click on the Cancel button, and the current encoding session will be scrapped and you will be returned to the main program screen. If you click the Save button, you will be presented with a standard Save As... dialog window. Give your file an appropriate name (without any spaces or accented characters), and click the save button to save the file to your hard drive.
Once you have saved the encoded media file, you are ready to pursue the Post-Processing (captioning and indexing) or Publishing (posting to server, building playlists, creating ANGEL pages, creating HTML) functions.
