Son of MediaFileThingy: Post-Processing (Indexing and Captioning)
The Index and Caption Existing File button provides you with the opportunity of adding closed captions and index markers to your file. A click on the Index and Caption... button launches a window prompting you to select the media file you would like to index.
Once you have identified a file and clicked the Open button, you will see a screen layout like the one illustrated below.
Setting a time for an index point or the appearance of a caption
To add a caption to your file, click the circular play button to cue the media file to the point where your caption should be inserted and then click the circular button again to pause the track and set the time for the new entry.
When the file has been stopped using the circular pause button, the large rectangular Review from... button will indicate the time that has been set for the current index or caption.
Clicking on the Review from... button will play back the media file from the time specified on the button, and cause the Review from... button to toggle to Stop Playback . A click on the Stop Playback button does not affect the start time for the current index or caption point.
To tweak the time that has been set for the current index or caption point, click the left or right arrows on the scrollbar above the Review from... button: these will move the start time by tiny fifth-of-a-second increments, enabling you to precisely synchronize the start time with a particular word or action in the media file.
Adding a caption or index point
When the playback location is set where you'd like it to be, type the text of your caption or index entry into the field marked Index, Caption, or URL Text , select whether this is a Index, Caption, or URL entry from the Marker Type field, and then click the Add New Marker button. It will be added to the list beneath the Add New Marker button.
To add an additional index entry or caption, click the circular play button or the rectangular Review from... button to begin playback, and then click the circular pause button to halt playback, clear the captioning field, and set a new start time.
Editing a caption or index point
To edit an existing caption or index point, click on it to transfer its text to the Index, Caption, or URL Text field, make adjustments as required, and then click the Save Edit button to save the change. (Clicking the Save button will create a second entry without changing http://web.plattsburgh.edu//technology/it/help/streamingmedia/images/defaul35.jpg" border="0" />
Deleting a caption or index point
To delete an existing caption or index point, click on the entry in the list beside the player and then click the Delete Marker button to remove the entry.
Then click on the Review from... button to play the file from the time location.
Saving the Indexed/Captioned File
Once you have added/edited the captions and index points in your file, you can save your work by clicking on the Save Index/Captions button. You will be prompted to supply a filename and location for the saved file. Once you have done so, click the Save button in the Save Indexed Media File window to save the newly indexed file to your drive.
If you created captions, you will also be prompted to save the captioning file. This should, ordinarily, be saved with in the same location as the media file.
You will need to remember where you've put both files, since you'll need to upload both to the media server.
