Homecoming 2014: Plattsburgh Pride, Rain and Shine
Homecoming 2014 welcomed back more than 400 alumni from as far away as Illinois and Michigan who came to town to enjoy each other’s company, reminisce about the good old days, see what’s new on campus, watch fellow alumni play lacrosse, hockey, baseball and basketball and partake in a variety of events across campus and around town.
Some enjoyed a piece of history, watching the four new Hall of Fame inductees receive the honor Friday night in the Angell College Center ballroom. The Plattsburgh State Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed Jim Mihalko ’66 (men's soccer), Keri (Webb) Duffy ’97 (women’s soccer), Corey Davidson ’01 (men's cross country) and Kelly Duffy-Coryer ’01 (women's cross country) to its ranks.
A few other highlights:
Tips, Tricks and a Three-peat
Journalism alumni and faculty led a career advice panel for current students on Saturday morning, imparting wisdom and a few hilarious experiences from the field. At noon the place to be was Memorial Hall Field for the annual tug-of-war championship. Students and alumni muscled up, battled the elements and pulled each other back and forth across the wet grass, cheered on, of course, by their teammates and fans. The fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma fended off all challengers — for the third year in a row. If you want their trophy in 2015, you may want to start training now.
Tastes in the Tent, Fun on the Field
The afternoon tent party was a hit. With plates full of sweet and hot sausages, peppers and onions — and legendary michigans — it’s hard not to be. As fans filled up under the tent, the women’s soccer team trounced the Buffalo State Bengals 4-1. Sloppy field? No problem. Meanwhile, families ice skated with Burghy, and baseball, lacrosse and hockey alumni re-lived Cardinal glory.
Saturday Night Samplers and a Sunday Fun Run
The Saturday evening wrap-up saw alumni learn a thing or two about brewing as they sampled local beers at Plattsburgh Brewing Company (We recommend frosting your souvenir glass in the freezer before filling it at home). Many others made their way to restaurants across town or to the Monopole for toasts with old friends. In the morning, a crowd of brave souls laced up their running shoes and ran the Cardinal 5K Fun Run in chilly air. We salute you.
Whether you took part, crafted your own itinerary or reminisced from afar, we hope you enjoyed yourself. Here’s to Homecoming 2015. See you then.
