Campus Hosts College Exploration Program for Underserved Youth

Thirty underserved high school juniors and seniors will experience campus life and learn about the college application process in a three-day residential program at SUNY Plattsburgh.

The program, called College Explore, is run by College for Every Student, an organization that is helping 25,000 students through partnerships with 200 rural and urban primary and secondary schools.

The participating students are traveling to Plattsburgh from New York City, Detroit and Kentucky. Most of them will be the first in their family to attend college.

College Explore at SUNY Plattsburgh runs from July 20 to July 22.

This is the first time SUNY Plattsburgh has hosted the College Explore program, which has been held at various colleges around the country for the past decade.

“This is a great match for us given our history of admitting first-generation college students and helping them succeed,” said Bryan Hartman, vice president for student affairs.

The skills students will hone in the program will be critical for them as they enter the college search process, Hartman said.

As part of the program, the students will live in residence halls, attend classes taught by faulty, complete admissions and financial aid workshops, learn about the college essay writing and interview processes and take part in activities that foster leadership.

Beyond learning how to navigate the college admissions process, College Explore will give students an overview of academic programs and teach them how to take the skills they will learn with them not only to college but into their professional careers later on, said Dr. JoAnn Gleeson-Kreig, associate vice president for academic affairs.

“The program is designed to give students a chance to reflect on their interests, capacity for growth and leadership potential,” Gleeson-Kreig said. “This experience should help the students gain confidence in their ability to navigate the college selection process.”

College Explore at SUNY Plattsburgh runs from July 20 to July 22.

The program has a significant impact on many of the students who participate, Rick Dalton, president and CEO of College for Every Student.

“When they return from College Explore, the stories we hear from students are often life changing.”
