Family Weekend Set to Showcase Campus, Region
Date: Sept. 22-24
SUNY Plattsburgh is set to welcome parents and families during the annual Family Weekend Sept. 22-24 with a full slate of activities, programs and fun.
The weekend begins Friday, Sept. 22 with registration from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Angell College Center lobby. Families can check in, pick up reserved tickets and get directions to local attractions.
That evening, the Plattsburgh Gospel Choir will perform beginning at 6:30 in Burghy’s, near Subway in the ACC. Families are then invited to play bingo at 9 p.m. in the Flynt Commons, second floor, ACC.
Registration continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, and a free pancake breakfast will be served during those hours in Algonquin Dining Hall. Hosted by the Inter Sorority Association, donations will be accepted to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Other activities throughout the weekend include
- A three-mile fun run and walk, ice skating at the Stafford Ice Arena
- Dueling Pianos performance by 176 Keys
- The Presidents’ Lakeside Breakfast Buffet at Valcour Inn and Boathouse Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
“Family Weekend gives students the chance to show off their new home,” said Cori Jackson, director of the Center for Student Involvement. “They’ve had a few weeks to settle in and get comfortable with campus. They enjoy showing their families where they live, where they eat, where they go to class.”
It’s also the perfect time to check out the region. The Adirondacks in the fall boast some of the best leaf peeping opportunities in the Northeast. Visit a local apple orchard to pick your own apples, take a ride to Lake Placid, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, or visit one of the many historical sites around Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain, and learn how the area played an important role in turning the tide against the British during the War of 1812.
“The Presidents’ breakfast at Valcour is the perfect venue for seeing where history was made,” Jackson said. The Battle of Valcour was a significant battle during the Revolutionary War.
“The views from the Valcour Inn and Boathouse, which is owned and operated by our College Auxiliary Services, are amazing.”
