Field Experience

Photo of a middle school student listening to a lecture given by a teacher education studentEarly field experience is a major part of our program that puts all teacher candidates in the area schools their freshman year. This provides our teacher candidates with multiple opportunities to observe, interact, tutor, and teach students in various settings and levels beginning in their freshman year.

Attached to their courses in education, teacher candidates will have a lab opportunity to work with students in an afterschool program each week. In this lab teacher candidates will develop strong language and organizational skills with students, while delivering activities that are engaging and developmentally sound for the children.

Over the course of the undergraduate program, teacher candidates will work with children in area schools and the afterschool program for approximately 400 hours.

In the B.S./M.S.Ed. program (childhood/special education) students will also complete a practicum of 200 hours in the early childhood special education in area schools prior to student teaching.

Both undergraduate and combined students will complete a full semester of student teaching.
