Meet some of our Geology Students
A senior geology major from Newington, Ct., Brett was attracted to Plattsburgh State by its vicinity to the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain.
"I like the area. What drew me here was the location. I like the feel of the area and have made great friends. And the professors, especially in geology, have been enormously helpful."
Brett has had the opportunity to work with other students and professors on a National Science Foundation funded project studying the hydrogeology of watersheds in the Adirondacks.
"The best part of the project for me was to see what my role is as a geologist on a project that involves a multidisciplinary group working together. I have found that I work on the basic, the fundamental level, and others are building their work on top of that." Brett hopes to go to graduate school next fall.
"First I'll get my master's, then maybe on to get a Ph.D... I'm a person who has a lot of questions and, at Plattsburgh State, I always got answers from the professors. You don't always get that."
Jenny Winch, a local student from Lake Placid, is finishing her degree in geology this spring, and is beginning the Master's of Science in Teaching program at Plattsburgh State.
Jenny has been a research assistant to Dr. Mary Roden-Tice and has processed samples for fission track dating from the Adirondack Mountains and New England.
This spring, Jenny and Jaime Potter will do independent research on samples from New Hampshire and Maine to determine the uplift history of this region and present the results of her research at the annual meeting of the Northeast section of the Geological Society of America.
This summer, they will attend a thermochronology workshop at Yale, where they will learn the technique of (U-Th)/He dating and apply this to samples from New England.
