Ms. Julie Cheng, Class of 2006
Julie Cheng from Clifton Park, New York, entered SUNY Plattsburgh as a freshman, and she was a marketing major with minors in both broadcast management and women’s studies. During the 2005–06 school year, Julie served as president of the Marketing Club (Plattsburgh State Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association).
I Felt Close to the Faculty and Gained so Much From Them
“What I enjoyed most about the marketing program at SUNY Plattsburgh was the faculty, which I always felt very close to and was able to gain so much knowledge from. One of my favorite group activities was the Marketing Club, which was very active! I made so many amazing friends through the program while gaining professional experience at the same time. The entire marketing program is a strong one, in my opinion, because the classes touch on projects that involve working with real businesses around the community.”

Kerry Rafferty Haley graduated in May of 2000 and is now the director of community relations at Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
Learning From Professors with Real World Experience Prepared Me for My Career
“You think that time flies when you’re in school, but I can’t believe how much time has passed since graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh in May 2000! After earning a B.S. in Business with a Study Option in Marketing, I felt prepared to tackle the workforce. Working in a team setting to complete assignments and group projects helped me to develop skills and knowledge that I use every day. Professors had real world experience and they used those examples in their teachings, making theory and knowledge easy to comprehend and apply. In both my first job as development assistant for a hospital foundation and my current job as director of community relations, I have discovered a variety of items I learned in school that have been extremely helpful in my career. From writing newsletters to making budgets to creating ads, the skills I learned at SUNY Plattsburgh have proved invaluable!
“In addition to the strong business education, there are a lot of great students and professors at Plattsburgh with whom I still keep in contact. My college advisor was a wonderful mentor and someone to aspire to be like. I still look up to her today with amazement at all that she has accomplished. Thinking back, most all professors in the School of Business and Economics were very accessible, respectful of each student and their individuality, extremely knowledgeable, and always willing to listen.”
Kerry’s Advice for Students
“If there are three things that I could tell any student beginning their undergraduate studies, they are: (1) take advantage of the knowledge that your professors have, (2) join a club and take part in its activities, and (3) do at least one internship. As president of the Marketing Club, I gained priceless leadership experience, and my internship experience led to my first job after graduation.”
Dennis Racine, Class of 1992
Dennis Racine graduated in May of 1992 and is now the director of marketing and customer leadership at Lycoming Engines, a Textron Company.
Real-Life Projects Shaped the Way I Approach Projects Today
“I’m excited to be working in my field of study — marketing — as director of marketing and customer leadership for Lycoming Engines (a manufacturer of airplane engines) and am currently the youngest director in the company’s 76-year history. My studies at Plattsburgh opened my eyes to marketing and provided me with a strong foundation to continue my education. After graduating from Plattsburgh, I completed two M.B.A.s, one in marketing and one in international business.
“At SUNY Plattsburgh, I enjoyed the projects and real life experiences that were shared by the faculty. There were two members of the marketing faculty that left a lasting impression on me. Dr. Church and her marketing research class were great, and the marketing research project we did was a real-time, real-life project that delivered results. Dr. O'Hara also provided a great learning experience filled with real-life examples and projects that laid the foundation to the way I approach projects in my job today. I also enjoyed the class sizes, the teaching atmosphere, and the student life at Plattsburgh.”
