Study Abroad and Exchanges Staff - Ingrid Almaguer
Study Abroad Advisor
My goal as a study abroad advisor is to get you out into the world! Whether it’s a short-term, semester-length, or a National Student Exchange program, I will work with you from everything to program selection, the application process, finding courses that fit your academic needs, and everything in between. With over 500 programs available throughout SUNY, there is something for everyone!
Academic credentials: B.A in Criminal Justice from SUNY Plattsburgh and M.S in Student Affairs Counseling from SUNY Plattsburgh.
Personal biography: I am originally from New York City and first came to Plattsburgh in 2005 as a freshman STAR student. I instantly fell in love with the natural beauty of the Adirondacks and the sense of community here. I loved it so much that I decided to return to pursue my masters degree in 2012 and feel incredibly lucky to be able to work for the college that afforded me so many opportunities both as an undergraduate and graduate student.
Places I have visited: I have traveled extensively throughout interior and northern Spain and have spent a few weeks as a back packer in Italy. I hope to continue my travels throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin and South America
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh activity: My short-term study abroad program in Bilbao, Spain where I was first introduced to Basque culture. It was this experience that influenced me to continue my travels throughout the region and ultimately led me to my future career path as an advisor for the GEO Office!
Favorite experience as GEO staff member: Helping students make sense of what at times can be a confusing process. I love watching students become confident and capable in what they’re doing. Studying abroad changes people, and it’s amazing to witness the transformation!
Best advice for prospective study abroad students: It’s okay to feel anxious or scared when you’re about to thrust yourself into an entirely new experience. Life is all about learning how to live with a certain level of uncertainty, but pushing past it anyway. Once you do, you will amaze yourself with all that you can accomplish!
