Global Education Office Staff - Christina Martinez
International Student Advisor
I am the first immigration resource for SUNY Plattsburgh international students on F-1 and J-1 visas. My role involves advising students on the opportunities available to them within their visa type, advocating for them on campus while teaching them to advocate for themselves, and acting as a liaison with governmental agencies when necessary.
Academic Credentials: B.A. Psychology, SUNY Geneseo (Geneseo, New York); M.S. Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration, Canisius College (Buffalo, New York)
Brief Biography: I grew up in Rochester, NY surrounded by a loving and supportive family who valued traveling as often as possible. After graduating from college at SUNY Geneseo I had the opportunity to work with their incredible international students and learned that I have a passion for assisting people from all over the world. I decided to get my graduate degree while working with international students in Buffalo, NY before moving to SUNY Plattsburgh to work as the International Student Advisor. I love how much I learn from my students about other cultures and ways of life while also helping them to find their place in the college community.
Places I have visited: I have had the opportunity to travel with my family to Canada, Mexico, Finland, France, Jamaica, and Haiti. There are many places in the world I hope to travel to in the future!
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh Activity: My favorite time of year is around graduation. I love seeing students reflect on their time at college, discuss how much they have grown, and what lessons they will take with them. Watching my students succeed and accomplish their goals is my favorite thing.
Best advice for prospective international students: College is about embracing the opportunities around you. My best advice is to participate in class discussions, attend events on and off campus, join clubs and organizations to find others with similar interests, and make the most of your time at SUNY Plattsburgh.
