Author of "The Forever Fix" to Present on Gene Therapy

10:32am EDT, 17 Oct 2012

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2012) — A renowned journalist and geneticist is coming to SUNY Plattsburgh to speak to students and the public about gene therapy.

Ricki Lewis, author of “The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It,” will give her talk in Room 208, Yokum Lecture Hall, at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

“The Forever Fix” tells the story of gene therapy: how it works; the science behind it; how patients (mostly children) have been helped and harmed; and how scientists have learned from each trial. It looks at the promise of the “forever fix” — a cure that, by fixing problems at their genetic root, does not require further surgery or medication.

The author of four text books and co-author of two human anatomy books in addition to the “The Forever Fix,” Lewis has had her work appear in many scientific, medical and consumer magazines and journals, including Discover, The Scientist, Science, Nature, Self, Health, Woman’s World, Genetic Engineering News, High Technology and BioScience. She also writes biotech reports for Cambridge Healthtech Associates and the Cure Huntington Disease Initiative.
