1970 Kent State, Jackson State Shootings Remembered by Student Who Was There

04:00pm EDT, 26 Apr 2014

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 26, 2014) —This year's Kent State/Jackson State commemoration at SUNY Plattsburgh will feature one of the students wounded in the 1970 Kent State incident.

Alan Canfora, who was shot in the right wrist by National Guard members while he was protesting  the invasion of Cambodia, will speak at the vigil, which starts at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, May 1, on the front lawn of the Kehoe Administration Building.

Canfora will also take part in a “lunch-in” at 1 p.m. in the Amnesty Room of the Angell College Center.

The vigil has been held every year for the past 44 years to remember those students shot and killed or wounded in May 1970 at the two universities. On May 1 that year, students gathered at Kent State in Ohio to protest the United States’ invasion of Cambodia, a campaign then-President Richard Nixon had announced the night before on television. National Guardsmen fired 67 rounds into the crowd of students in a period of 13 seconds, killing four and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.

Eleven days later, Mississippi police opened fire on students protesting at Jackson State, killing two and injuring 12.
