New Coordinator Named for SUNY Plattsburgh Center for Public Service

03:52pm EDT, 15 Jun 2016

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 15, 2016) — Julia Devine, adjunct lecturer in theater and English at SUNY Plattsburgh, has been named the college’s coordinator for the Center for Public Service.

As coordinator, Devine will assist in the promotion, facilitation and coordination of the college’s public service mission to Plattsburgh and the region with an eye toward enhancing campus/community partnerships and relations. She will be responsible for seeking grant funding to support such activities and collect data on the college’s community engagement activities. Devine will begin the 10-month position at the start of the fall 2016 academic year.

“I am honored and excited to be the coordinator of the Center for Public Service,” Devine said. “I bring to the position more than 15 years of experience working in nonprofit development and arts administration from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, which includes the past five years serving the college and the Plattsburgh community.”

Devine, who holds a Master’s of Fine Arts from Harvard, teaches courses in acting, grant and professional writing. She also serves as a freelance grant writer for organizations in Plattsburgh and Los Angeles, where she resided prior to moving to Plattsburgh. While on the West Coast, Devine was development director for Yiddishkayt, fundraiser for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and event coordinator for Community Arts Resources.

A native of Philadelphia, Devine was education and development director for the Crescendo Theatre Company and managing director of Relache Inc., a leading contemporary music ensemble. From 2015 to 2016, she served as a creative community fellow for the National Arts Strategies at the University of Pennsylvania. In Plattsburgh, she co-founded Outside Art, a community organization dedicated to producing public art installations.

“I’ve worked hard to build bridges between the college and the community and will continue to do so in this position,” she said. “One beautiful example I am currently behind, along with other community members, is the “Woods and Wild Things” mural in downtown Plattsburgh; it’s being painted by the art department’s Norman and Tory Taber. It’s a small sign of what the center wants to achieve: to foster a wide network of community partners, show off the talents of our entire college and, in short, make Plattsburgh and the world a better place.””
