Campus Garden Tour, Work Day Planned for Sept. 8
11:35am EDT, 1 Sep 2017
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2017) — There will be an open house and work day at the SUNY Plattsburgh Campus Garden Friday, Sept. 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
According to Dr. Lauren Eastwood, coordinator of the garden, the garden was started about 10 years ago by “students who were deeply committed to better understanding the politics of food.
“The campus garden honors this legacy today by providing a space for students to learn,w ork and contribute to their community,” she said. “This past summer, garden workers regularly donated produce to the Interfaith Food Shelf and Joint Council for Economic Opportunity. The garden space holds great curricular potential for a variety of academic disciplines. Students who engage with the garden inevitably develop skills associated with problem solving at the same time as they take great joy and pride in what they are able to accomplish and produce.”
A guided tour of the garden will be held at 3:30 p.m. when Eastwood will discuss what the group accomplished this summer.
Visitors are invited to help work the sections.
“There’s lots to do, so stay to get your hands dirty if you have time,” Eastwood said. “If not, just come to check out the garden and what we’ve been doing all summer.”
The Campus Garden is located on George Angell Drive, across from Plattsburgh High School near the SUNY Plattsburgh rugby fields and Saranac River Trail.
“I am really proud of the students who participated in making the garden a success this past summer, and have great excitement about what we can achieve in the future,” Eastwood said.
