Lake Champlain Sea Kayak Institute Open to New and Experienced Paddlers
11:11am EDT, 24 May 2012
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (May 24, 2012) – Individuals wanting to learn to kayak or to increase their skill level at the craft are invited to attend the 14th annual Lake Champlain Sea Kayak Institute, July 16-19, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 daily.
Level I and II classes will run concurrently, starting from SUNY Plattsburgh’s Lake Champlain Paddling Center at the Valcour Conference Center in Peru, N.Y.
Level I classes are for new paddlers or those with limited technical knowledge. Topics covered include wet and dry entries and exits; self rescues; assisted rescues; rolling; sweeps; draws; and rudder strokes, with daily trips to Lake Champlain’s beaches, islands and bays.
“By the end of the four days, participants will have paddled more hours than some recreational paddlers might in a summer,” said Dr. Larry Soroka, chair of the college’s Expeditionary Studies Program and institute director.
Level II is designed specifically for alumni of the Level I program or for individuals with considerable technical knowledge or experience. It is designed to answer the question, “How do I do it better?” and includes four days of daily paddles and instruction focused on efficiency and precision.
