Student Items Bring in More than $2,000 for Food Shelf

Picture of rummage salePLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (May 29, 2012) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s rummage sale netted $2,350 and a van full of food for the Plattsburgh Interfaith Food Shelf, in addition to another van full of clothing, shoes, coats and bedding for the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

The sale was a joint effort between several offices on campus and the students who donated unneeded items to raise money for charity instead of just throwing them away.

Chartwells and CAS donated Algonquin Hall, where the large rummage sale was held during the week after graduation. The bulk of the work was done by the staff in the offices of Student Activities and Volunteerism and of Housing and Residence Life. They collected items over the final weeks of spring semester. Meanwhile, custodial staff also pitched in, helping bag and haul the items, and Human Resource Services assisted with sorting and cashing people out during the sale.

“Overall, it was a good, collective campus effort that was praised by folks for the good it did the community, our employees and the fact that it was a green imitative that kept some of these items out of the landfill,” said Bryan Hartman, director of residence life and associate vice president for student affairs.
