1993 Film Parallels Rape, Murder of Indian Woman Last Fall

PLATTSBURGH (April 17, 2013) — The SUNY Plattsburgh Asian Studies Committee and the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies will show the film, "Damini," 7 p.m., Friday, April 19 in Room 201, Yokum Lecture Hall.

“Damini” is a film about a woman in India who witnesses her husband's younger brother raping the maid-servant. The husband is too late to prevent the assault. The family then conspires to cover it up.

The Bollywood film, released in 1993, is being show for its connection with the true story about the rape and murder last fall of a medical student in India. The crime made international headlines and has opened up a great deal of discussion on gender and violence.

The film provides a historical perspective on how issues of gender and violence have been discussed in India. Free.
