Film Screening, Panel to Shed Light on Issue of Human Trafficking

03:22pm EDT, 30 Aug 2013

Not My Life Cover PicturePLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Aug. 30, 2013) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s Department of Criminal Justice will focus on the issues behind human trafficking 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, when the department hosts a panel discussion and screening of “Not My Life” in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall.

Filmed on five continents over a period of four years, directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Bilheimer and narrated by Glenn Close, the film looks at the multibillion dollar global industry. It shows how modern-day slavery thrives along the transnational fault lines of extreme poverty, social injustice, political unrest and acts of violence. It further acknowledges that although trafficking and slavery affect millions of human beings all over the world, most are children.

The panel will include faculty from the college’s Criminal Justice Department and members of the North Country Human Trafficking Task Force, which will also be meeting earlier that day.
