Branch Campus Offers Educational Leadership Programs

04:46pm EDT, 28 May 2015

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (May 28, 2015) — SUNY Plattsburgh’s new Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership programs for school building and school district leaders are designed for professionals in the field, building on their previous work experience and graduate coursework.

Offered through SUNY Plattsburgh at Queensbury, the program is aligned with Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium standards and prepares graduate students for leadership positions in education. Each class is taught as a hybrid with 50 percent in class and 50 percent online.

“Our educational leadership program prepares certified teachers in the capital region wishing to enter into formal leadership roles with three options: teacher leader, school building leader, and school district leader,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, coordinator of the educational leadership program at the branch campus.

The 30-credit-hour program enables those students who meet requirements to qualify for a New York State Administrative Certificate at the building level.

Once school-building leadership certification has been obtained, school leaders can move to the next phase — the eight-credit-hour program for school district leaders. Among other requirements, these candidates commit to a 400-hour internship at elementary, middle school, high school and central office experiences.

“Our teacher leader program prepares teachers to take leadership roles in their home district,” Johnson said. “Our SBL program prepares educators to enter into entry-level positions such as principal and assistant principalships, department chairs and special-education roles.”

The CAS in Educational Leadership programs have rolling admissions, and applications are accepted at any time. Completed applications must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the semester of matriculation. Classes are only available at the branch campus in Queensbury.
