PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 8, 2016) — Two SUNY Plattsburgh art faculty members are painting a new mural in downtown Plattsburgh as part of the public art organization, Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art.
Norman Taber, associate professor, and his wife, Tory Taber, adjunct lecturer, are creating the mural, “Woods and Wild Things” along the Clinton Street wall of the building that houses Corner-Stone Bookshop, facing Trinity Park. The unveiling will be during the City of Plattsburgh’s July 4 festivities. In addition to being SUNY art faculty, the Tabers are children’s book authors and illustrators.
“Woods and Wild Things” takes its inspiration from a previous Taber mural project at Beekmantown Elementary School and the animal illustrations of Nora Graves. Art Graves, owner of Corner-Stone, said he is thrilled to have the mural painted outside his store and hopes other businesses follow suit, offering up their walls for public art.
Outside Art was co-founded by Julia Devine, adjunct lecturer in English, and Amy Guglielmo, who said, “We wanted to produce a mural that would be fun and inspiring for local children, celebrate local wildlife in the city and bring more people downtown.”
The organization will host several events during the July 4 festivities, including the “Woods and Wild Things” June Art Show at 30City Community and Visitors Center with a June 3 opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. and a “Celebrating Our Wild Adirondack Neighbors” with Wildways scout, John Davis, June 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 30City.
Outside Art at Downtown Rising will feature children’s art activities on Fridays in June from 4 to 7 p.m. in Trinity Park. And Outside Art will have a presence in the City of Plattsburgh July 4 parade, after which will be the mural unveiling at 3 p.m. and then a children’s book reading by Guglielmo at Corner-Stone Bookshop.
