Mark just started graduate school at SUNY ESF. In Mark's words: It's official...I have been appointed as a Graduate Research Assistant here at ESF. My research will focus on bioremediation of a large industrial sludge bed in Solvay, NY outside of Syracuse. The waste contained within the sludge bed is made up mainly of Calcium Carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, calcium silicate, calcium chloride, silicon dioxide, calcium sulfate, calcium hydroxide, sodium chloride etc... The main problem is the leaching of these chemicals into nearby Nine Mile Creek which in turn flows into Onondaga lake.

I will study the use of select willow and poplar plants that can tolerate the high soil pH and salt content to alter the water balance at the sight. The hypothesis is that the fields of willow and Poplar will uptake and transpire water efficiently enough to stop leaching of pollutants into the creek. Other parts of the experiment include the use of different organic amendments to

increase growth and a greenhouse trial this winter.

Needless to say I am exited to be working on my own research/ Master's thesis project that can have a huge impact on environmental quality and serve as a platform for change.

I think there is some more information on the project at the centralized willow site found at (I will probally be updating this part of the site as the project is just beginning.)

I have held many positions in the past several years, some of which include Stack Tester, Environmental Technician, Health & Safety Officer, Env. Mgt. Specialist, and my current job, the Director of Environmental Mgt. Systems. I currently assist large manufacturers develop internet-based management systems for their environmental issues. It's very challenging, and I never would have thought back in '94 I'd be doing this type of work. I have also designed graduate level courses in Industrial Pollution Prevention and Corporate Environmental Management. In another year or two, I will begin pursuing a PhD in Environmental Management, most likely at Oklahoma State, North Carolina or Vanderbilt.
