Professor Slater has enjoyed a long career in public relations, cross-cultural advertising, economic development, public television and the classroom. An authority on academic service learning in public relations, Dr. Slater coordinates the public relations program and its internship program. He was the first faculty adviser to SUNY Plattsburgh’s recently chartered Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter. Dr. Slater earned Lambda Pi Eta’s Outstanding Faculty award for his efforts in the public relations program and “Most Outstanding Faculty Member” for his work in Plattsburgh State's graduate administration and leadership program.
A former Fellow of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Institute for Ethics in Public Life, Dr. Slater is devoted to building students' understanding of public relations ethics and regularly has led members of the PRSSA in ethics master classes delivered around the country. Dr. Slater just co-authored the BP ethics case study in the new edition of Public Relations Practices. He has also contributed his expertise to major publishers of textbooks in public relations, corporate communication and mass media. Dr. Slater also has assisted firms in developing online curriculum in advertising.
Long-time member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and its Educators Academy, Dr. Slater has served as a judge in PRSA’s Bateman Case Study competition since 2010.
Acutely concerned about the online identities of rural communities and businesses, Dr. Slater collaborated for many years in the Community Web Visibility project and recently co-led several training programs in social media for small, rural firms and agricultural enterprises in New York's North Country.
Dr. Slater also coordinates the Judaic Studies minor on campus. He serves as Plattsburgh State Hillel’s faculty adviser and organizes the college’s annual Holocaust commemoration and the Douglas R. Skopp Creative Competition on the Theme of the Holocaust. Dr. Slater is a former Rabin Fellow, a distinction that allowed him to develop the American Mass Media and the Jewish Experience project.
