SUNY Plattsburgh Police Bike Patrol

Established in the fall of 1994 the University Police Bike Patrol consisted of one bike, a specialized Rockhopper, and 3 volunteer bike officers. In the summer of 1995 two officers attended the 1st Bureau for Municipal Police Certified Bike training that was held in Ithaca, New York. The course was instructed by both major Police Bicycle organizations, IPMBA and LEBA. The week-long course covered classroom lectures on various related topics, skill courses (gotta love those cones!!) and naturally many hours of riding.

In 1997 a second bike was added to the "Fleet" a Trek 7000 with a front shock. Also in 1997 the University Police Department at Plattsburgh hosted its 1st New York State Certified Bike Patrol School. We certified 14 riders from all across New York State. We also certified 4 Police Cyclist Instructors during the week long school.

In the summer of 1998 Plattsburgh State University Police hosted our 2nd New York State certified Police Bike School. We certified 7 Police Cyclist and 1 Police Cyclist Instructor.  Even though it was a small school we managed to have plenty of fun, excitement and not to mention the long rides and killer hills!

To date, University Police has conducted 6 police bicycle schools at SUNY Plattsburgh. In total, 75 members of the University Police Department, New York State Police, Plattsburgh City Police, Clinton County Sheriff's Department, and other SUNY schools have been certified to conduct police bicycle patrols. Instructors from SUNY Plattsburgh have also assisted at Police Bicycle Patrol courses at four other SUNY colleges around the state.

Today our bike unit consists of 7 New York State Certified Police Cyclists and 2 New York State Certified instructors. Bikes have been upgraded to include 2 Trek 6000 models and a Giant Rincon. Police bicycle patrols continue to be popular with police departments nationwide. Bicycle patrol has proven to be a valuable crime prevention tool.
