1.0    Purpose

The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh (“College”) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all members of the campus community.  Fire prevention is a critical element of this commitment.

Recently, Hoverboards have been related to many fire incidents across the United States.  Several state and national safety and consumer agencies are now investigating these devices. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has also raised additional concerns and is asking that incidents be reported to them via www.SaferProducts.gov.  Colleges across the country are taking steps to prohibit use of hoverboards on their campuses.

The purpose of this policy is to promote the safety of the campus community and prevent damage to college property.

 4.0    Policy

Due to a range of safety concerns, SUNY Plattsburgh prohibits hoverboards from being charged, operated, stored, or used within the college’s main campus facilities, including but not limited to all residence halls, dining facilities, academic/administrative buildings, athletic facilities and outdoor areas. All persons listed in section 3.0 who own a hoverboard or related device are asked not to bring any such devices to campus.  Violation of this policy could result in disciplinary action by the college. SUNY Plattsburgh may re-evaluate this directive in the future.

University Police personnel are authorized to store hoverboards until such time as the owner is able to remove them from college property or the hoverboard is considered abandoned pursuant to department policy.

Questions about this policy should be directed to the Environmental Health and Safety Office or University Police.
