Services Covered by the Student Health Fee
The student health fee covers most primary health care and psychological services that are provided at the Center. The following list summarizes services and medications with no additional charge to students:
- Counseling and Psychological Services
- Diagnostic Tests
- Nutritional Advice
- Health Education & Outreach
Services Not Covered by the Student Health Fee
The student health fee does not cover the following list of health care services. Students incur nominal charges for these services and pharmaceuticals, payable at the time of each visit. All fees are subject to change without written notice. Payment for the following may be made in the form of cash, personal check, or Cardinal Cash.
- Emergency Contraception: $20
- Knee Immobilizer: $25
- Sling: $10
- Wrist Splint: $10
- Ice Pack: $5
- Flu for faculty/staff $20 (free for students)
- MMR: $65
- Tetanus/Diphtheria: $35
- Tdap $35
- Tuberculosis Test: $5
- X-rays: done by referral to the Outpatient Department of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH). Students are responsible for all charges incurred at CVPH.
No-Show Fees for Counseling Services
The Student Health and Counseling Center strives to optimize students’ access to our services. An ongoing problem in Counseling Services has been the student who misses his or her appointment without any prior notification. For example, during the Fall 2010 semester, 190 appointments in Counseling Services were “no-shows” – 190 appointments that could have been offered to other students seeking counseling.
To encourage students to call and cancel or re-schedule their appointment 24 hours in advance, the Center decided to implement a “no-show” fee starting in the Spring 2011 semester (a practice that has proven to be effective on other campuses dealing with the same issue). The no-show fee for an appointment with a counselor or the AOD coordinator will be $25 and the no-show fee for an appointment with the psychiatrist will be assessed at $60. There are often legitimate reasons for missing an appointment. An appeal form is available and students are given two weeks from the date of the missed appointment to submit the form. If the appeal is approved, the fee is removed from the student’s account.
The State of New York and SUNY Plattsburgh require that all students enrolled in six or more credits must:
- be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR);
- forward a completed Medical History, Immunization Record, and Physical Examination Report to the Center within thirty days from the first day of classes; and
- enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or be covered by comparable and adequate insurance through another source. Failure to comply may result in dis-enrollment from the college.
Note that students need a physical from their physician in order to complete the Medical History, Immunization Record , and Physical Examination Report . Also note that if a student is covered by a comparable and adequate insurance company, the student has the opportunity to decline the Student Health Insurance Plan on their bill. The name of the insurance company, address and phone number, policy number and effective date are required.
Students who are covered by managed care plans outside of Plattsburgh are recommended to investigate the out-of-network benefits of their plan. If these out-of-network benefits significantly restrict the use of health care services in the Plattsburgh area, then we recommend that the student purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan in addition to their managed care plan.
For the 2016-2017 academic year, the student health fee is $200 per semester for full-time students and $17 per credit hour for part-time students. This fee is included on the bill that students receive for each semester.
Students exempt from this fee are:
Students registered in programs requiring that they be more than 35 miles away from the Plattsburgh campus (such as student teaching, study abroad, internships, co-ops), branch campus students; and those students taking all independent study courses).
Full-time employees of SUNY Plattsburgh or the Research Foundation who are enrolled in classes (excludes graduate assistants and dorm assistantships).
Students enrolled in three credit hours or less who commute more than 35 miles each way to campus.
Students enrolled in only online courses who live more than 35 miles away from campus.
If your status falls into one of the above categories, please contact Student Accounts to have the charge removed from your bill.
The Center Director or designee will consider extraordinary exemption requests. Refund requests must be made within 30 days of the first day of the semester.
