Fall 2017 Opening Week Information for New and Returning Students

Classes Begin:
Monday, Aug. 28

Beginning Saturday, Aug. 26


Residence halls open for new and returning students on Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. To check in, get your room combination and have your questions answered, report to the office of your assigned hall. If you do not know your assignment or if you plan to check in after Sunday, report to the Housing and Residence Life Office in Room 103 of Algonquin Hall.

No-shows forfeit their room reservation at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29. A listing of off-campus housing options is available online.

The office is open Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Student Mail Center

The Student Mail Center is located in Mason Hall. The entrance is located on the lower level of the back of the building. The Student Mail Center will be open Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday Aug. 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Admissions Office

The Admissions Office, located on the 10th floor of the Kehoe Administration Building, will be open Sunday, Aug. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During these hours, newly admitted students to the Fall 2017 semester may stop in to discuss concerns related to their enrollment (e.g., transfer credit evaluations, change of major requests, college catalogs, etc.)

Placement Exams (Required for Course Registration in Some General Education Courses)

Saturday, Aug. 26

  • 2:15 p.m. - 3:10 p.m. - English Directed Self-Placement Information Session - Feinberg 129
    • Any questions regarding the English Directed Self-Placement Exam will be addressed during this Question and Answer session.
  • 3:10 p.m. - Calculus Readiness Test - Feinberg 105
    • This exam is for students who will take a calculus course at any time in their Plattsburgh State career, to demonstrate their readiness to succeed in a first-semester calculus class.  Students planning to take calculus at SUNY Plattsburgh must either pass this exam or take MAT 102 (Precalculus) before they can register for calculus.
  • 3:10 p.m. - Mathematics Competency Exam - Feinberg 105
    • This exam determines appropriate placement into the required General Education Mathematics Skills course. NOTE: This exam is required if you do not have documentation of one of the following:
      1. Transfer credit that satisfies the mathematics skills requirement (refer to your CAPP report).
      2. An SAT math score of 460 or greater.
      3. An ACT math score of 19 or greater.
      4. Transfer credit equivalent to MAT 101.

Sunday, Aug. 27

  • 4 p.m. LIB Proficiency Exam in Feinberg Library 108.
    • No pre-registration is required, just bring a Picture ID with you.

      Eligible to take the LIB Proficiency Exam?

      Anyone who has never received ANY grade LIB105 or LIB200 is eligible to proficiency out of the LIB105 course by passing the LIB105 Proficiency Exam. To clarify, you are not eligible to take the Proficiency Exam if you already have a "W" or a grade for another library course on your transcript. A student may take the Proficiency Exam only once.

Course Advisement and Registration

For new students who have not registered or who have questions for an academic advisor from their major department.

    Meet with department faculty to discuss appropriate course selection and learn about degree requirements, followed by on-line registration.

Matriculation Ceremony

Sunday, Aug. 27

  • Time: 3 p.m.
  • Location: Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall

A students-only event. Residence hall staff members will lead new students into the auditorium for their official welcome and matriculation.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to form a welcome line at the outside center entrance to Hawkins Hall to warmly and enthusiastically cheer new students as they enter the Giltz Auditorium for the Matriculation Ceremony.

You are asked to wear your Plattsburgh attire (T-shirts and/or hats with the Plattsburgh logo) or red and white clothing. Noise makers will be provided.

Due to space constraints, attendance at the ceremony cannot be accommodated, so you are free to leave after the students walk through the line.

Drop/Add for all matriculated students via Banner Web will be Sunday, Aug. 27 at 5:15 p.m. through Sunday, Sept. 3 at 11:30 p.m.. After Sept. 3, a $20 late course-add fee will be applied. In addition, there will be a $20 fee for each course withdrawal processed beginning the second week of the semester.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office, 4th floor Kehoe Administration Building, is open Monday through Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Financial Aid Office will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Students participating in the Federal Work-Study Program were emailed an information packet in early August. Log in to your account and go to the "Student Services" tab and then the “Student Employment – Cardinal Connect" link to view available work study positions.

Student Employment (Career Development Center)

Students interested in part-time, temporary or summer employment on or off campus can stop by the Career Development Center (Angell College Center, Suite 118) to review job openings.

Office Hours

  • Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Students do not have to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for these services, although they may need to be matriculated in a degree program.

Job Fest

The Part-time Job Fest will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Angell Center Cardinal Lounge. Students who are seeking part-time jobs on campus or off campus should attend. The Job Fest will feature representatives from the Career Development Center to help you login to CardinalConnect, begin to develop your resume, and navigate other Career-related technology and services. Representatives from Financial Aid and several campus employees will also be on hand to answer questions. Come early to check out part-time jobs that are available on campus and in the local community and on campus employers will be invited to attend.

Cardinal Cash

Cardinal Cash deposits may be made weekdays throughout the school year at College Auxiliary Services, located in Clinton Dining Hall, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special hours will be on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26 and 27 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Deposits are also accepted at the Angell Center Desk and the Student Accounts Office (financial aid transactions) or online at

Parking Permits

All student vehicles are required to properly display hang tags when parked on campus.

To register, login to My.Plattsburgh and submit vehicle under ‘Automobile Registration’; then confirm enrollment on your bill, with parking and registration fees included. For a veteran parking waiver, email DD-214 (honorable discharge) or email enrollment status (if DD-214 is permanently filed) to; and remove parking fees from bill.

Hang tag pickup is August 26-30, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., at the Angell College Center Information Desk. Thereafter, late registrant tag must pickup tags from University Police (UPD), Health Center Building. An athlete or RD that moves in prior to August 26 must request an early release of hang tag from

All parking cancellation requests must be submitted to (where applicable, return tag to UPD) NO LATER THAN 5:00 p.m., September 15. Once tag is assigned, the registration fee is nonrefundable.

Ticketing is in effect at all times, except ‘No Permit Visible’ and ‘Permit Expired’ begin September 4 at 8:00 a.m.
