Placement Exams (Required Prior to Course Registration)

English Directed Self-Placement

Entering students without ENG101 credit take a required Directed Self-Placement questionnaire that helps determine writing competency and indicates which course, ENG 100 or ENG 101, might best suit particular students' needs. This questionnaire is available at Note: login is required.

Please direct any questions regarding this placement to the First-Year Composition program Director, Dr. Tom Friedrich, at [email protected]. Based on what students conclude, they register for ENG100 or ENG101. In the first week of all sections of ENG100 and ENG101, students also take an in-class diagnostic; if faculty readers conclude students would be better served by being in another class, students will be thus informed before the unrestricted drop/add period ends.

Saturday, Jan. 27

  • 3 p.m. - Mathematics Competency Exam - Feinberg 105
    • This exam determines appropriate placement into the required 100-level Mathematics course beyond MAT 101, including the 100-level GE Skills courses. NOTE: This exam is required if you do not have documentation of one of the following:
      1. Transfer credit that satisfies the Mathematics Skills requirement (refer to your Degree Works report)
      2. SAT math score of 460 or greater
      3. ACT math score of 16 or greater
      4. Transfer credit equivalent to MAT 101.
  • 3 p.m. – Calculus Readiness Test - Feinberg 105
    • This exam determines eligibility to take a first-semester Calculus course. Students planning to take a Calculus class should take this exam only if they have taken a Precalculus course in high school or elsewhere that DID NOT transfer to SUNY Plattsburgh as credit for MAT 102. Precalculus means a course BEYOND the New York State Regents sequence of Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II/Trigonometry.  If you have never had a Precalculus course, you should take MAT 102 instead of this test. Note that some first-semester Calculus courses have an additional co-requisite of MAT 104 (Trigonometry).
