First-Year Freshman Orientation Dates

Summer 2018

We will assign freshman students to sessions based on their month of birth. This is subject to change if deemed necessary.

If the session to which you are assigned does not work for you and your family, you can switch sessions based on availability when you register for your session. Online registration for Orientation begins June 1.

No changes will be made prior to June 1, 2018 and you will have the ability to change your session when you go online to register.

We expect to assign students to sessions as follows:

Session 5 Tuesday, July 17 – Wednesday, July 18 September/October
Session 6 Thursday, July 19 – Friday, July 20 November/December

Check-in for students and family members begins at 2-4 p.m. in Moffitt Hall the day your session starts. Session will end by 2 p.m. on the last day.

Note:

  • EOP Students - Educational Opportunity Students will take part in the EOP Pre-Freshman Summer Institute, and do not attend this orientation program.
  • International Students - International Students attend International Student Orientation prior to the start of the Fall semester and do not attend this Orientation Program

Freshman Orientation Schedule

Day 1
Time Description
2 – 4 p.m. Check- In. Location: Moffitt Hall. Unpack, get settled and meet classmates.
4 - 4:30 p.m. Welcome to Cardinal Country. Join representatives from the College who will welcome you to SUNY Plattsburgh and to the New Student Orientation experience
4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Meet Your Floor. Meet in the lounge on your floor to meet your orientation leader and learn what to expect from your orientation experience.
5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Dinner
6:45 – 7:45 p.m. Getting Involved on Campus. College students spend approximately 45 hours per week on academic work. What should you do with the rest of your time? This session will teach you about ways to get involved outside the classroom and how this involvement can lead to your long-term success.
8 – 9:30 p.m. Developing Relationships. Spend time getting to know your fellow classmates and talking about your goals for your years at SUNY Plattsburgh.
Day 2
Time Description
7:45 – 8:15 a.m. Breakfast
8:30 – 9:45 a.m. Beginning a Dialogue on Diversity. This conversation with staff members from the Center for Diversity, Pluralism & Inclusion will be an introduction to exploring diversity within our campus community.
10 – 11 a.m. Exploring Your Hopes and Fears. College faculty and staff members, along with orientation leaders, will lead you in an activity and conversation to help you address your concerns and develop your goals as an incoming college student.
11:15 – 12:00 p.m. Acing Academics & Rocking Registration. Staff from Academic Advising will review everything you ever needed to know about preparing for your college learning experience including transitional issues, academic information and understanding what happens during course advisement and registration.
12:00 – 1:30 p.m. Advisement. College faculty members will be on hand to help you choose which classes to take this fall.
12:30 – 1:30 p.m Information Marketplace
12:30 – 2 p.m. Course Registration

Freshman Family Orientation Schedule

Day 1
Time Description
2 - 4 p.m. Check- In. Location: Moffitt Hall
4 - 4:30 p.m. Welcome to Cardinal Country. Location: Yokum 200 Join Bryan Hartman, Vice President for Student Affairs, for a welcome to SUNY Plattsburgh followed by some tips about how your student can be successful inside and outside the classroom.
4:30 - 5:30 p.m. College 101: Tips for Student Success. Location: Yokum 200. A session designed especially for the parents of first generation college students to learn about how to help your student navigate their college experience.
5:30 - 6 p.m *Dinner (Optional). Location: Sundowner For those families interested in eating dinner on campus, you may purchase meals at The Sundowner (or you may eat on your own off campus).

Time Description
7:45 - 8:15 a.m. *Breakfast (Optional). Location: Sundowner For those families interested in eating dinner on campus, you may purchase meals at The Sundowner (or you may eat on your own off campus).
8:30 – 9 a.m. Your Guide to Meal Plans, Textbooks, Cardinal Cash and More. Location: Yokum 208. College Auxiliary Services staff will explain what you need to know about their services.
9:15 – 10:45 a.m. Student Services Panel. Location: Yokum 208. Join Student Affairs staff members as they share information about campus services available to your student including housing and residence life, campus safety and career development.
11:00 – 11:45 a.m. Exploring Your Hopes and Fears for Your Student. Location: Yokum 208. College staff members, along with orientation leaders, will lead you in an activity and conversation to help you address your hopes and concerns for your student as they head to college.
11:45 - 12:30 p.m. Student Health/Counseling Services & Financial Aid Info. Location:Yokum 208. Financial Aid staff will guide you through what you need to know about billing, loans, scholarships and more.
12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Information Marketplace. Location: Myers Fine Arts Lobby
