First-Year Freshman Orientation Schedule 2017

Day 1

Date Time
3:00 5:00 p.m. Check- In. Location: Whiteface Hall.
Unpack, get settled and meet classmates.
5:00 p.m. Meet Your Floor.
Meet in the lounge on your floor to meet your orientation leader and learn what to expect from your orientation experience.
5:30 6:30 p.m. Dinner at the Sundowner.
6:45 – 7:15 p.m. Welcome to Cardinal Country.
Join the college faculty and orientation leaders as they share tips about how to be successful in the classroom.
7:15 – 7:45 p.m. What You Need to Know to Be Successful in the College Classroom.
Meet in the lounge on your floor to meet your orientation leader and learn what to expect from your orientation experience.
8:00 – 9:30 p.m. Developing Relationships.
Spend time getting to know your fellow classmates and talking about your goals for your years at SUNY Plattsburgh.


Day 2

Date Time
7:45 8:15 a.m. Breakfast at the Sundowner.
8:30 9:00 a.m. English Proficiency Conversation.
A faculty member will review your English Placement Exam results and help you decide which English course to take.
9:15 10:00 a.m. The Essential Elements of Well-Being in College.
Being a successful college student means maintaining a well-rounded sense of well-being. Meet staff members who will share what you need to know to thrive in the college setting.
10:15 11:15 a.m. Understanding Academic Requirements.
Staff from Academic Advising will review everything you ever needed to know about preparing for your college learning experience including transitional issues, academic information and understanding what happens during course advisement and registration.
11:30 12:40 p.m. Exploring Your Hopes and Fears about College.
College faculty and staff members, along with orientation leaders, will lead you in an activity and conversation to help you address your concerns and develop your goals as an incoming college student.
12:45 1:30 p.m Lunch at the Sundowner.
1:30 2:00 p.m. Free Time with Your Orientation Leader.
2:00 2:30 p.m. College, Alcohol and You.
Maybe you've already heard the adage--your four years of college may be the best years of your life! So how do you maximize your college experience while maintaining a healthy lifestyle? Join in on the conversation about how to make healthy choices regarding alcohol and drug use and personal safety.
2:45 4:00 p.m. How to be Sex Positive: Boundaries, Consent, Expectations & Resources.
Learn how you can make a difference in preventing sexual violence on your campus. This session will help you become educated and empowered to act.
5:30 6:15 p.m. Dinner at the Sundowner.
6:30 – 8:00  p.m. Beginning a Dialogue on Diversity.
This conversation with staff members from the Center for Diversity, Pluralism & Inclusion will be introduction to exploring diversity within our campus community.
8:00 – 9:30 p.m. Getting Involved on Campus.
College students spend approximately 45 hours per week on academic work. What should you do with the rest of your time? This session will teach you about ways to get involved outside the classroom and how this involvement can lead to your long-term success.
10:00 p.m. Free Time.

 

Day 3

Date Time
7:00 a.m. Check Out.
7:45 - 8:30 a.m. Breakfast.
9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Advisement.
College faculty members will be on hand to help you choose which classes to take this fall.
10:00 a.m. – Noon Course Registration.
9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Information Marketplace.
Visit various booths to learn more about campus offices and services that may be helpful to you during your time at SUNY Plattsburgh. Examples include Study Abroad, Center for Student Involvement, the Student Association and more.
11:00 a.m. – Noon Last Minute Check Out.
